About Us

There has been an Association of Residents, or an Ghaqda, of Santa Marija residents for close to three decades. Over the years the needs of the residents and the environment have undergone many changes.

Present times reflect the ever increasing demand for growth in the building sector and the increased values of land. As a result the aims and objectives of the Ghaqda have had to move with the times in which we live.

The main aims of the Association are:

To foster awareness about the need to protect the environment in and around Santa Maria Estate, Mellieha.

To foster amicable relations between residents.

To protect and promote the interests of its members.

To insist that any development within Santa Maria Estate respects all established zoning conditions and building regulations, so that no development, detrimental to the environment, will  take place. The environment is understood to include the valleys, ridges, cliffs and the coast as well as built-up areas.

It is also our aim to work with the Administration and the Mellieha Local Council on present and future needs with regards to for instance road safety, road surfacing, transport, utilities and other public services.

The Ghaqda is a registered, non-profit making, Association as defined in the Voluntary Organisations Act (Chapter 492 of the Laws of Malta) and the Ghaqda has no political aims.

The Committee of the Ghaqda consists of a Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, Secretary, Membership Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer and Public Relations Officer. Up to five members may be co-opted to the committee at its discretion.
